Bio
NY native, Torae grew beyond the mischief of his youth and got focused on music and his career - one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
Taking on a fast-food job in his teenage years to cover studio costs, Torae’s investment in his music career paid off in 2007 when he dropped his breakthrough mixtape Daily Conversation. That release led to him going on his first tour the same year opening for hip-hop legend Masta Ace & set up his collaborative studio album debut Double Barrel, with producer Marco Polo on Duck Down Records in 2009. Shortly after dropping the critically acclaimed project, he released his solo debut album For The Record and his follow-up sophomore LP Entitled.
At the height of Double Barrel’s popularity, DJ Eclipse of SiriusXM’s Hip-Hop Nation let Torae know he was in need of a new co-host for his show Rap Is Outta Control. Apprehensive at first, Torae then dove in headfirst and spent four years as DJ Eclipse’s co-host before getting his own show “The Tor Guide,” which now airs 6 days a week on Hip Hop Nation.
Being a radio host on one of the largest satellite radio platforms in the world has also opened up other opportunities for Torae. He’s been doing red carpet coverage for XXL Magazine over the past three years. He hosts live performances nationwide and has been at the forefront of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival co-hosting since 2010. As an actor he appeared in the VH1 film ‘The Breaks,’ has been attending acting classes and is the voice of the Brooklyn Nets in their television spot as well as the writer & performer of their theme song.
Simply put, Torae’s ‘Brooklyn Boy done good’ story is bigger than even he imagined it would be -- for himself and his family. The beginning is far different from the present and even the future, whatever that may hold. “I didn’t have much [then] but I always knew that I wanted more,” he says. “I always felt that there was more out there.”
